Dr. Hamman is board certified by the American Board of Orthodontics and is the current director for the state of Mississippi to the Southern Association of Orthodontists. He is a past president of the Memphis Association of Orthodontists, the University of Tennessee Orthodontics Alumni Association, and member of the SAO’s Scientific Affairs Committee. In his free time, Dr. Hamman plays guitar in the worship team at Hope Baptist Church and enjoys hunting, fishing, and camping with his two boys (Reed and Amos Ray) and his wife Amanda.

Dr. Wayne McElhiney, DPh., DDS. is the Director Emeritus of the Concerned Dental Professionals Committee of the Tennessee Dental Association. Dr. McElhiney has served on the Committee since 1984 and accepted the Directorship in 2006. He is a 1966 Graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, served as a reserve office in the United States Army. A 1974 graduate of the University of Tennessee College, a member of the Dean’s Society, Vice President of the student body, and a member of the Student Council. He practiced Dentistry in the Nashville area for many years, appointed a Preceptor for UT in General Dentistry. A member of the American Dental Association, Tennessee Dental Association, Nashville Dental Society, National Association of Alcohol & Drug Counselors, Advisory Council University of Utah School on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies, appointed to the Advisory Committee for the school in 2006¸and a faculty member in 2008. He was named Alumni of the year in 2012. He was appointed Chief of Staff at Tennessee Christian Hospital, a Consultant for Drug Formulating and Pain Regimen for Alive Hospice in Nashville. He served as consultant to the American Dental Association’s Council on Dental Practice in 2012, served on the advisory Committee Program in 2010-2011. He received the “Fellowship Award for Distinguished Service” by the Tennessee Dental Association and is a member of the American College of Dentist. He was a member of the Board of Directors Vol State Community College Foundation, Board of Directors Nashville Dental Society, and Bluegrass Yacht and Country Club. He is a Noted lecturer and publisher author involved in teaching health professionals the disease concept of addiction. Dr. McElhiney is married, 52 years to Phyllis, one child, one granddaughter, whom he acted as a “Math Tutor” for this past year!!
Dr. Nathan R. Hamman, DDS, MDS
Director, Southern Association of Orthodontists
Dr. Nathan Hamman is a native of northwest Tennessee. His original plan was to be a band director and he was a music education major at Austin Peay State University before making the switch to pre- dentistry. He received his DDS at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and completed his Master’s degree and orthodontic training there as well. His researched focused on cellular expression and modulation of specific cytokines during orthodontic tooth movement. Dr. Hamman joined the part time faculty at UT’s orthodontic department in 2012 where he teaches orthodontists-in- training and serves on their thesis committees. He also travels to Tucson, AZ once a year to teach domestic and international residents and orthodontists the art of wire bending and orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning at the Charles H. Tweed International Foundation for Orthodontic Research and Education. Dr. Hamman, Dr. Richard Williams, and their incredible team make up their office, Williams & Hamman Orthodontics, which has been creating smiles in DeSoto County since 1985.
